Waiting For Rain, Live Performance, 2019

Kumasi, Ghana.

Materials: living artist, black soap, jute sacks, wood, uncompleted building, rain

Project considerations: The region experiences a short dry season beginning in December and ending in February. During this time the weather is scorching and not easily endured. This reality became the impetus for the project. As I lived in the city through the month of january and into february, I considered what it means to wait for a season to end. What are the implications of stillness in wait versus a more active, preparation.

An effigy with flesh of black soap waits for rain. The soap begins to chemically react to the environments and begins to darken.

The effigy, was not built to withstand rain, if it is left there unattended in a rainstorm, it will deteriorate and wash away. It was my intention to attend to black body when the rain came. However, as it is often in life, those with the desire and means to help you, may not be there when the aid needs to be affected. Instructions were left near the building for other performers to attend to the body in my absence.
